Laminated fabrics
Lamination is a process used to increase the durability and chemical resistance of the material and give it other necessary properties. Synthetic fibers (para-aramid, fiberglass) are mainly used as a base, but the method is suitable for all kinds of fabrics, including blended and natural ones. A layer of aluminum, silicone or polyurethane film is applied to the surface during processing.
The reverse side of the fabric is not laminated, so it does not lose its original characteristics, such as tactile comfort, but gains additional, so wear products made of such materials comfortable and safe.
Features of laminated fabrics
Main materials properties:
- durability;
- safety;
- hygienicity;
- form stability;
- moisture resistance;
- resistance to mechanical damage, fading, ultraviolet, chemical and biological agents;
- endurance.
Satin and plain weave provide mechanical strength, opacity, smoothness, stiffness, abrasion and tear resistance.
Depending on the nature of the underlay and the type of finish used by the manufacturer, laminated fabric in Poland may be heat-resistant and flame-resistant, thus protecting against:
- high temperatures up to 500 ºC (including short-term exposure to extremely high temperatures up to 1000 ºC);
- open flame;
- splashes of molten metal;
- sparks.
Laminated layer performs the function of waterproofing and vapor barrier, reflects the intense infrared radiation.
Applications
The main area of application of laminated materials – sewing of protective clothing, individual elements and parts of personal protective equipment (PPE), protecting against open flame, convection heat and intense infrared radiation: suits, overalls, aprons, gloves, capes, helmets, pads, shoulder pads, knee pads, armbands. Such aramid overalls are intended for firemen, metallurgists, welders, blacksmiths, etc.
Laminated fabrics are used for making fire protection curtains.
As a technical fabric, such materials are used in different types of insulation (thermal, acoustic, etc.), steam lines and ducts, smoke protection, boiler rooms, automotive industry.
